FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE GUIDE | NJ FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER

MONMOUTH COUNTY, NJ

Hello friend! I've created this guide to help you make choosing family outfits simple (I hope!). Please don't feel pressure to go out and spend tons of money on new outfits for your entire family, this is simply a guide to help you find inspiration. By using this guide you should be able to take some of the outfits you already have and put them together in a cohesive way that will compliment one another. Keep in mind that your outfits will look best in images when color palettes coordinate. Pick 3 or 4 colors that compliment one another and check your closets!

Styling Tips

for Her

Start with mama first and "say yes to the dress"! Long flowy dresses look great in portraits and flatter the female body, so if you enjoy getting "dressed up" go for the dress! That's not to say you have to wear a dress or skirt. If you're not into the dressy vibe, jeans are always fun too, especially for fall photos. Whatever you decide focus on your outfit first, something that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Tip: Three quarter length sleeves look more flattering on camera and have a slimming effect on arms. Layering is also an option; you can bring a cute jacket or cardigan for some shots as well. Avoid super tight clothes and logos, and look for neutral colors with either a solid or light subtle patterns. Remember you don't want your outfits to be so loud/colorful that they take away from your beautiful family.

STYLING TIPS

for Him

Consider swapping out jeans and shorts for fitted dress/colored pants with brown dress shoes. Unless you're going for a fun beach session then maybe opt for navy or gray dress shorts paired with a long sleeve button down shirt and leave the shoes on the boardwalk! For fall pictures add layers - a vest, scarf, v-neck sweater. Try to avoid baggy/super tight clothes, neon colors and logos.

STYLING TIPS

for the Kids

Accessories are always fun for kids - headbands, bowties, suspenders. Don't feel that you need to put kids all in the same outfit, mix it up (but sometimes it looks cute too!). If mom and dad are in solids, look for subtle patterns for the kids! Try to limit patterns to a maximum of two per family- to many patterns can be distracting in your photos.

Remember at the end of the day what really matters is not the outfits you choose but the memories you make!
