Things I Wish I Had as a First-Time Mom

Becoming a mom for the first time is an incredible experience—equal parts exciting, overwhelming, and full of learning curves. While no amount of preparation can truly prepare you for the journey, there are definitely some things that made my life easier my second and third time around. Here are some of the things that I couldn’t do without:

1. Cotton Newborn Knotted Gowns

Late-night feedings are tough for new parents, so anything to make them easier was worth it for me. This is definitely one baby item that I wish I had for my first. The gown made diaper changes throughout the night a breeze. I used Kate Quinn’s organic cotton knotted gowns, which might be discontinued, but Colored Organics carries something similar.

Bonus tip: I also used Caden Lane’s knotted gowns, not for sleeping but for photos!  They are perfect for newborn photoshoots.

2. A Swivel Bassinet for the Early Months

With my second and third babies, I switched from a free-standing bassinet to a swivel bassinet that I kept right next to my bed. Keeping my baby close at night made nighttime feedings and diaper changes so much smoother. Having my babies sleep close to me also helped them sleep better, which let me get more rest as well! I used the Halo Swivel Sleeper, but there are many similar products available.

3. A Portable White Noise Machine

A white noise machine became my best friend once I discovered its magic, but I wish I had used it from the start. It helps drown out household noises and soothes babies into a deeper sleep—something every sleep-deprived parent can appreciate!

4. Sleepsack Swaddles

As newborns, I used the Halo cotton sleepsack and later transitioned to Woolino sleep sacks, which I love. They are made of organic cotton and merino wool, and they grow with the baby, fitting them for up to two years.

5. My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow

Breastfeeding is a journey in itself, and the right gear makes a world of difference, especially during those late-night feedings. This nursing pillow was a game-changer for me when I had my third baby, especially in the first few weeks when he was so tiny. My lactation consultant recommended it, and it was worth every penny!

6. Calendula Spray and Nipple Cream

Calendula spray quickly heals and soothes sore and cracked nipples.

7. A Baby Wrap

Babies love to be held—like, all the time. Baby wraps provide a snug and secure fit, promoting bonding and reducing crying. They also make daily tasks so much easier while still keeping my little one close. I used the Solly Baby wrap, but there are lots of options out there!

8. The Babacush

The Babacush was another recommendation from my lactation consultant. It attached directly to our baby swing and kept my babies upright when they had gas and reflux. It has a calming vibration and swing motion that would put my babies to sleep in seconds.

9. Snuggle Me Organic Infant Bare Lounger

This was a great portable lounger for my babies that made it easy to bring them anywhere in the house.  It was also a cute way to take photos of them snuggled up and looking cute!

10. Extra Support and Encouragement

Whether it’s a local mom group, a lactation consultant, or a friend who has been through it before, having a strong support system can make a world of difference in those early days.

With my second and third babies, I met with a lactation consultant who not only helped me successfully nurse my second baby again after months of pumping but also provided invaluable advice and recommendations. Many of the items on this list came from her guidance, and looking back, I couldn’t have done without them. Surrounding yourself with knowledgeable and supportive people can truly make the transition into motherhood much smoother.
